The District Fisheries Department seized approximately 450 kilograms of gel-injected shrimp, valued at around Tk 4.5 lakh, during an anti-adulteration drive in Sirajganj on Friday morning (October 9). The confiscated shrimp were later destroyed and buried to prevent them from entering the market.
The joint operation was conducted at Kutuber Char Fish Market by the Sirajganj District Fisheries Office and the Raiganj Upazila Fisheries Office. District Fisheries Officer Md. Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the matter.
According to fisheries officials, dishonest traders had injected chemical gel into the shrimp to artificially inflate their weight and maximize profit. Officials noted that selling such adulterated fish not only cheats consumers out of fair prices but also poses serious health risks and compromises food safety.
"We conducted the raid to protect consumer rights and curb fraudulent practices in the fish market," said a fisheries official, adding that regular monitoring and surveillance will continue to ensure safe food for the public.
